Collection development involves knowing the answers to the following questions:

  • Who are your library users?

  • What are their needs and interests?

  • What is the library’s mission?

  • What is the curriculum of the school?

  • Which materials best suit the needs of your educational program?

  • How can they be identified and purchased?

  • Which materials no longer belong?

Answers to these questions will help shape your efforts to select a variety of materials for different reading levels and interests connected to the curriculum, supporting our efforts to teach students the value of being a lifelong learner and reader.
